Our Approach to Innovation
we always have new projects, this is how we do it
How We Develop New Projects
From inception, Art in the Docks has pioneered new and different ideas that culturally enrich the communities of east London. We are rooted in the clear belief that access to art and culture is not a luxury, but a transformative force in people’s lives. As an artist-led social enterprise embedded in the Royal Docks, we work in a part of Newham where cultural engagement has historically been low, using creativity as a tool to reduce inequality, strengthen identity, and build social connection. Our commitment to innovation lies in how we place communities not as audiences, but as co-creators, developing programmes that respond directly to local lived experience and unlocking the social, emotional and economic potential of creative participation.
Participatory Placemaking is central to this approach. We design projects that actively invite residents to shape their environment, from collaborative neighbourhood reimagining workshops to large-scale community parades and exhibitions rooted in local heritage. Community projects bring together archival storytelling, collective making, and public celebration, transforming shared histories into visible, lived experiences across multiple Royal Docks locations. This work goes beyond consultation: it builds ownership, pride, and a sense of belonging, using creativity to turn spaces into places that reflect the people who live there.
Youth Empowerment is another key pillar, with innovative programmes that connect creativity to future opportunity. Through sustainability and upcycling workshops delivered with partners such as the University of East London, young people engage with urgent issues like environmental and climate change, urban planning and social injustice while developing practical and creative skills. These projects position creativity not only as self-expression, but as a pathway into the creative economy - building confidence, agency, and employability in communities where such opportunities are often limited.
Artistic Development and Elevated Creative Health are embedded across all activities. We provide inclusive, artist-led environments where people of all ages can explore drawing, textiles, making, and storytelling without judgement. Past exhibitions and programmesdemonstrate a commitment to nurturing both emerging artists and first-time amateur participants drawn from the local communities. This work supports wellbeing, reduces isolation, and fosters long-term engagement with culture, reflecting a belief that creative activity can meaningfully improve quality of life.
Looking forward, projects in development continue to expand this innovative model. Deeper integration of creative health programmes, stronger links between youth pathways and cultural career are continuous ambitions. We plan to expand participatory placemaking initiatives that connect housing, public realm, and community voice. Across all strands, Art in the Docks remains committed to a people-led methodology where art is not imposed but grown from within communities.
We are committed to demonstrating the enduring power of culture to shape healthier, more connected, and more equitable places.
