about us
art in the docks is an artist-led social enterprise (CIC). We are privileged to be embedded within our local community in the London Borough of Newham, surrounded one of the youngest and most ethnically diverse population in the UK. The opportunity to engage with our local, and wider, community is exciting, and we strive to embrace it in all that we do in our unique space.
Events are of high artistic quality and value, but at their centre they connect with, and involve, local communities who may find themselves excluded from the traditional art world.
There are three main strands to what we do:
Careers in the Creative Economy. We actively signpost young people towards careers in the creative economy. Our Creative Pathways programme centres around active engagement with Newham and East London’s educational ecosystem: from primary schools through to university. In concert with local schools, colleges and home tutors, and with active involvement from on the UK’s most prestigious arts institutions, we encourage young people to credibly visualise themselves embarking on careers in Britain’s creative economy.
Levelling up of Art and Culture. Our Community Cultural Engagement programme makes art and culture accessible to everyone in an area of London where engagement levels are amongst the lowest nationally, where investment in the arts is critically low, and where the potential for cultural enrichment is often missed. We proactively engage with communities who frequently find themselves excluded from the traditional art world. We fully subscribe to the concept of cultural democracy, presenting exhibitions and events that are easily accessed, free, and inclusive to everyone.
Creativity Led Therapy. The therapeutic connection between creative activity and wellbeing is hard to dispute. It goes way beyond aesthetic. We provide creative workshops to people who might be living in isolation (especially during and post covid), people coping with/recovering from long term illness, people suffering from anxiety, fear and distress. We help people coping with bereavement, and people who live with long term challenges to their mental health and wellbeing. We do all of this in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
