Up-cycling
Yuliya V Krylova presents her new wearable art collection made from up-cycled materials.
The basic elements I use in my creative process can be described as:
Love - The state of my consciousness and my awareness, which drives the flow of all my ideas through stages until they are finally manifested physically;
Creativity - The processes of my body I use to make work with material tools;
Up-cycling - All the objects and materials I use in a creative process are by-products of the textile industry, unwanted materials donated by local businesses, friends and family, or objects found in re-cycling boxes in bicycle repair shops.
I find beauty in simple cotton fabric (calico), which is traditionally used by fashion designers to create toiles; but toiles are discarded and are treated as drafts or mock-ups in the fashion industry.
I do not do toiles. I use any piece of cotton or other textile to create a unique piece from the whole of it without making any drafts.
Many garments in the exhibition are treated with natural dyes, which I apply in a free-hand painted way. I enjoy the unknown and unpredictable way an ink or indigo dye might flow through the structure of a fabric.
All the garments embody the very best I could re-create from single remnants of fabric available to me at the time, and I always work with limited quantities of anything. I find an indulgence in respecting limitations which drives my creativity.
All exhibited items are one-offs. Please feel free to try on anything on display.
Last year, my first eco-fashion collection, “The Cycle”, was presented at the Art in the Docks show-space in the form of Butoh dance performance. The memory of this event is displayed as a short film accompanying this exhibition.
Enjoy !!!
