The harrowing story of the SS Alice disaster at Gallions Reach
The community remembers
An evening of storytelling, art and music
Together, local artist Christopher Mike and sculptor Vincenzo Muratore invite you to come and listen to the sad story of the sinking of the SS Alice at Gallions Reach. On Tuesday, 3rd September 1878, hundreds of innocent souls were tragically drowned in the greatest loss of life in any British inland waterway shipping accident. This event is designed to commemorate and celebrate their lives.
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Hannah Stockton of the National Maritime Museum who will share the circumstances leading up to the sinking of the SS Alice and the immense human tragedy it represents.
The presentation will be followed by the unveiling of a unique commemorative artwork by Rokhsana Fiaz, the Mayor of Newham. The piece is a unique blend of art and sculpture, lovingly created by Christopher and Vincenzo. It is a highly visual and compelling depiction of the sinking of the SS Alice.
The evening will conclude with a beautiful violin recital by Shlomy Dobrinsky, the world-famous violinist and recording artist.
Light refreshments will be served.
