The Social Art of Braided Hair: The Exhibition
Over the last few months, we have run a project alongside Nurture Academy called The Social Art of Braided Hair. The project celebrates braided hair as both a social act, and as an art form in its own right. In these pictures you will see a range of people learning the art of how to braid from professionals, but also spending quality time with family members and friends. Braiding hair is timeless; an act both traditional and modern. The intricate patterns tell stories, as with any piece of art, and in these photographs we hope to capture and celebrate the individual stories of the braid, and the collective story of the group.
There is still time to catch this exhibition. It’s open for the final weekend in Studio 2 on 26th and 27th October.

On Saturday 19th October, alongside the exhibition, we hosted two workshops run by Nurture Academy;
11am-12pm, HAIR ART WORKSHOP; a workshop which allows young people the opportunity to express themselves, and articulate through art what hair means to them.
1pm-2.30pm, LEARN TO BRAID WORKSHOP; this workshop is lesson in hair braiding. Students will gain the ability, understanding and confidence to practice and excel in their braiding skills.
These workshops offer young people an opportunity to learn, connect and grow.
These will operate on a first come first serve basis. If you don't get into a workshop, you are still more than welcome to observe or just visit the exhibition.
